The Vigilant had been neglected for about 20 years and had sunk in the yard where she was sinking into the mud and permanent retirement.

Benjamin Squirrell who bought the boat ” in an act of folly” had entrusted the restoration to Dave McAbe and Andy Voysey who have already achieved the impossible in rebuilding the bow and stern and fitting a new engine to power her away from a boat graveyard in Essex down the channel to Topsham in Devon.

So far they have managed to track down the sails that have sat in a sail locker for 18 years and at the moment they are rebuilding the ribs so the boat will have the structural strength to sail once again.

“Vigilant was built as a racing barge and that’s what she deserves to be again.”
